This past August, I had the joy of photographing Ava’s senior photos in Rochester, Michigan, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect evening. The sun was shining, the air was warm, and the golden glow of late summer set the stage for such a beautiful session. I’ve had the privilege of photographing Ava’s older sisters in the past, and it was so special to continue the tradition with her. Each session has its own unique personality, and Ava’s was filled with a relaxed, joyful energy that made the evening flow so naturally.

August is truly one of my favorite months for senior photos, and Ava’s session was the perfect example of why. The summer weather is comfortable, the days are long, and everything feels alive and vibrant. The greenery is still lush, flowers are in bloom, and the lighting has that dreamy warmth you just can’t get any other time of year. It creates the kind of timeless images that seniors and families will treasure for years to come.

We planned Ava’s session around golden hour, that magical window of time just before sunset when the light softens and glows. It’s hands-down the best time for photos because it flatters every skin tone, adds dimension, and creates that golden shimmer you see in so many favorite portraits. During Ava’s shoot, the sun dipped perfectly behind the trees, wrapping her in soft light that made every image shine. Rochester’s natural backdrops paired with that glow gave us endless possibilities for stunning shots.

Photographing Ava was such a joy, not only because she’s a natural in front of the camera but also because it felt like continuing a story I’ve been lucky to document through her family. Senior photos are such a milestone—celebrating who you are in this moment while also looking ahead to all that’s coming next—and Ava’s session captured that beautifully. I’m so grateful to have spent that warm, golden evening with her and can’t wait for her and her family to enjoy these photos for years to come.
